If you were to smoosh together the FlatOut series of demolition racing games and Nadeo’s TrackMania stunt-racing franchise, then systematically vacuum out all of the most appealing aspects of both titles, you’d have the basic equivalent of Crashday. It’s not that the game is terrible, but so little of it feels genuine or original; it’s more of a cheap, hacked-together clone of the aforementioned titles. And what’s more, it isn’t even a particularly good clone. The game’s race modes lack coherency–let alone excitement–and the stunt and combat modes fall flat.

There’s supposed to be a premise to Crashday, but it’s anyone’s guess as to what it is exactly. Booting up the game’s career mode simply drops you right into the middle of a backstory that features up-and-coming racers in some cockamamie imaginary racing league. But the text doesn’t explain much, and the guy doing the voice acting is practically indecipherable. Imagine, if you will, a game developer tracking down the man with the thickest British accent in the world, plopping him down in front of a series of bad New York mafia movies, handing him a script, and demanding he talk exactly like the gangsters portrayed onscreen. That’s how awful the voice acting is in Crashday.

Once you realize the premise is best ignored and actually jump into the game, you’ll find gameplay that’s just as clumsy as the voice acting. Racing in Crashday is exceedingly frustrating. Cars are a floaty, slippery mess, sliding out and crashing into random objects on a regular basis. This is an arcade racer, so no one’s asking for a devout dedication to realism. But arcade or not, these cars are not fun to drive, nor do they handle well. Of course, the trick is that you have to drive especially fast because the other racers have a preternatural ability to use their speed boosts at all the right moments and will always blaze past you if you screw up. So what you end up having to do is memorize every nook and cranny of each race track just so you can figure out where to use your boost and where not to use it. Another weird thing is that the game’s sense of speed isn’t all that good. You definitely get the sense that your car is about to go flying out of control at any second, but the visceral thrill of high-speed racing is basically absent.

Only the stunt and combat races are slightly better than the sense of speed. Stunt modes include tracks filled with ramps, jumps, and loops, but there’s a highly limited scope to the stunt track designs. The game lacks the sort of “look at how completely insane these tracks are” vibe that such games as TrackMania have all but perfected. They’re not kooky or bizarre; they’re just a bunch of ramps and loops. And they’re not even laid out well. The bonus is that the game does include a track editor, but even its scope is limited, allowing for a few bizarre twists but not much more.

The combat modes come in a couple of forms. There are straight-up demolition races where the goal is to just slam into opponent cars over and over again until everyone has exploded but you. Then there are weapon-based modes that give you a Gatling gun and a missile launcher so you can go nuts. These are, by far, the most entertaining modes in the game because, in stark contrast to the driving physics, the game’s crash physics aren’t half bad. Cars break apart pretty nicely, and the weapons aren’t hard to aim or use, which makes wanton destruction a fairly painless process. The main issue here is the limited array of tracks and weapons. It would be nice if there were more variety to the destruction at hand. But sadly there isn’t, and after a few plays against the computer, the action does get a bit tiresome.

Multiplayer would theoretically remedy that issue, but even the multiplayer isn’t without problems. The primary problem is that there’s nobody online to play against. Sure, the servers list lots of games being played, but they’re all being played across the pond by players in Europe. And the European version of the game isn’t compatible with the US version for some reason. So you won’t be able to play against any of them until Moonbyte patches one version or the other. We spent a considerable amount of time trying to find a US-based opponent but only found one playable online match during that entire span. To make matters worse, lag practically wrecked the experience. Trying to play a crash race while cars skip and jump all over the track is just about the most obnoxious thing you’ll ever experience.

Apart from the awful voice acting, the remainder of Crashday’s production value is bit more laudable. As mentioned previously, the crash effects are done quite nicely, and the cars deform and explode about as well as you would hope. The car models aren’t exactly impressive, but considering you’re just thrashing them over and over again, they don’t need to look pristine. The tracks are easily the weakest point of the visuals. The background environments are extremely generic, dressed up with bland-looking towns and set pieces, as well as unattractive textures. They’re not hideous, but they’re definitely not pleasing to the eye.

Of course, someone could try to justify the plain-Jane gameplay and total lack of originality found in Crashday by simply mentioning that it’s only a $20 game. Do you want to know how much a new copy of FlatOut 2 costs on the PC? Yes, that’s right, $20. And a copy of TrackMania: Sunrise? It’s the same price. Do yourself a favor and go right to the sources of Crashday’s inspiration rather than pay for a bargain-basement, bush-league version of the same basic gameplay concepts.

Sudden Strike 3: Arms for Victory

The game expands the borders of conventional RTS game. We introduced some major interface and gameplay innovations that will distinguish it from other WWII RTS games, and definitely from all the previous Sudden Strike series games, created by our company.

Enlarge The game will simulate joint operation of ground, naval and air forces on vast areas. New user interface paradigm will allow player to control these forces avoiding unnecessary micro-management, while allowing controlling individual units, if player would so desire. It will be convenient for both a beginner and for an experienced player. The player will choose the best way of controlling a game situation himself, thus it will be interesting to play same company several times using different tactics or control level.

Gameplay will include land and sea operations, with aviation acting as a support force for both. Sea forces will also be supported by submarines that can for example hunt down an enemy supply convoy. Carrier-based aviation will support both naval and land operation when possible. It will be possible to develop in depth coastal defence, thus, careful control of player naval and air forces will be the key to successful land operations. Harbors and airfields will play an important role in the gameplay, as gates for transports providing supplies and reinforcement. Land operations will cover vast areas, making reconnaissance an essential part of gameplay.

New 3D engine will be used in Sudden Strike 3 and other upcoming games. It utilizes the most recent versions of DirectX and OpenGL APIs, thus taking advantage of modern graphics accelerators power. The engine is targeted for RTS games mainly, utilizing a bird’s-eye view of the battlefield, with free camera control and close-ups supported. Game engine is capable of rendering large-scale maps with mountains, forests, water, with a huge amount of units. It supports realistic-looking dynamic shadows and special effects on a close-up view. Engine™ AI is able to effectively manage both large armies, and individual units.

Unreal Tournament 3

The road to Unreal Tournament 3 has been an interesting one for Xbox 360 owners. Not only have they had to gaze with green-eyed longing at the PC and PlayStation 3 versions available since late last year, they’ve also had to endure a storm of uncertainty regarding the possibility of user-generated mods existing on the Xbox. While that particular question still remains unanswered, at least those patient 360 owners can look forward to seeing some new content when the port finally arrives this summer. The most substantial addition to UT3 on the Xbox has to be the five new maps being offered. Like a travel guide with a Bio Rifle instead of a map, we recently spent some time in these new environments to see what they’re all about.

First on the itinerary is Rails. This map is designed for use in the Vehicle CTF game mode. It’s a giant level featuring a wide assortment of vehicles to choose from. Your selection isn’t just limited to the Raptors and Mantas other levels offer. No, the big twist here is the pair of rail tracks from which the map derives its name. Each base is connected by these tracks, giving you the ability to sit on a mobile turret and cruise from one end of the level to other while shooting anyone in sight. You don’t move very quickly on these turrets, so when you’re sitting on the thing you tend to become a pretty easy target. To make up for that, the cannons pack a real punch. The setting has a very Gears of War feel to it, a postapocalyptic urban wasteland that feels simultaneously futuristic and classically European. There are lots of alternate routes through demolished buildings and a river bisecting the level that you can actually swim across if you’re up to the task.

Another new map exclusive to the Vehicle CTF mode is Suspense Necris. As the name suggests, this one is an alternate take on the Suspense map already seen in prior versions of Unreal Tournament 3. The difference here is that the map is set following the Necris invasion, so the whole place looks quite a bit different. What began as a level set in a deep canyon with a flowing river and a massive bridge acting as the primary route from one base to another is now in ruins. The river has mostly dried up, chunks of the bridge have gone missing, and rather unfriendly tentacles crawl ominously in the distance. Downtown Necris, a map designed for the Warfare mode, takes on a similar look. It maintains the dense urban feel of the Downtown map, but with an unpleasant, ripped-apart look to it. Both of these alternate maps feature Necris vehicles rather than the Axon fleet the originals have.

The other two maps are both set in frozen climates with more than enough snow and icy water to go around. Cold Harbor is a Warfare map featuring one base set on a seaside harbor and another at the top of what could practically be considered a ski slope. From the outside, the map doesn’t look particularly big, but when you begin to explore you’ll find a cavernous docking bay leading to numerous underground passageways and elevators that will save you the trouble of traversing the steep, snowy hill. This one is probably our favorite of the bunch. The sheer brutality of the hill gives the map a unique feeling the others don’t have.

Finally, there’s the other cold-weather map, Koos Barge. As a simple deathmatch or team deathmatch map, it’s the smallest of the group. The entirety of the map consists of a single freight ship out at sea. In the distance you’ll see other boats bobbing up and down and the faint outlines of snowy mountains. This boat has two levels where you can fight: down in the holds among the shipping crates, and up top on the deck. It’s generally to your advantage to stay on top, because while you can jump down below from nearly any location, those stuck below have only a few options to make their way up to the deck. In our experience, we had the most success just hanging out on the deck and picking off everyone down below.

Other new additions to the 360 version include a pair of new characters–a Ronin named Kana and a Liandri named Nova–and the ability to play in split-screen both online and offline. And then there’s the downloadable content Epic released for the PC and PlayStation 3 versions, which will all be included in this go-around. You can expect to see Unreal Tournament 3 released July 7.

Sniper Elite

Sniper Elite takes place in 1945, at the close of the war. The game focuses on the conflict between Russia and Germany for control of Berlin. The Russian secret service, known as NKVD, is in town to steal the atomic-bomb technology from the German Army. You have to put a stop to that posthaste, because nuclear weapon technology in the hands of Stalin’s forces would surely spell big trouble for just about the entire world. You are an American sniper, trained by the OSS to be the best of the best when it comes to covert operations.

Disguised as a German soldier, you have to stop the NKVD at all costs. The single-player campaign is quite lengthy. There are 28 missions in a variety of different (but very similar) war-torn settings. The missions are pretty much what you’d expect from a sniper game. You’ll have to assassinate high-ranking officials, steal secret documents, rescue captured allies, and shoot hundreds of guys in the head. The campaign can easily take 12 hours or more to finish. If you complete all the optional objectives and take the time to set up all your shots rather than just blast away recklessly, this game will easily take up as much time as you’re willing to give it. Therein lies the conundrum with this game. If you play it carefully, a single level can take much more than an hour to complete. The stealth is well done here, and the game does a great job of building up the sense of tension that comes from sneaking around and picking off enemies. After a while, though, that tension fades into tedium, and you’ll eventually just be wishing you could move on already.

The missions aren’t particularly satisfying, either. Some of the more complex missions are great, like when you have to climb your way up a cathedral tower and snipe enemy soldiers as they rush your ally, who’s stuck waiting for transport. The problem is that most of the missions are rather anticlimactic. You’ll spend a long time fighting through as many as six or seven fairly simple but time-consuming objectives, only to have the final objective be something as simple and unexciting as walking to the ex-filtration point, unchallenged, so you can exit the level.

Another problem with the missions is that they require a lot of trial and error to really figure out what you’re supposed to do. You’ll die several times while trying to figure out what the best position is to complete your objectives, or where enemies will be coming from. This means you’ll replay the same mission several times, even on the easiest difficulty. This is especially frustrating when you go through 20 minutes or more of buildup, only to have the guy you were supposed to assassinate get spooked and run away. Then you have to go through that 20-minute buildup all over again. Luckily, you can save anywhere you want and at any time, though you do have a limited number of saves per mission. You’ll want to save often so you don’t have to keep going over your same tracks every time you die.

Headshots are the order of the day in Sniper Elite.

You’ll die a lot, too, because as a sniper you aren’t equipped to take much damage. A few rounds from a machine gun at close range are more than enough to put you down. You can find bandages and medikits on the ground and by searching corpses, but healing items are few and far between. The enemy artificial intelligence here is deviously intelligent, as well. In fact, the AI is almost too intelligent sometimes; they have an uncanny sense of where you are at all times, even when you’ve gone to great lengths to remain concealed. The enemies in the game don’t often just stand there and wait for you to pop them in the head. Enemies run for cover, crouch, and lay down, and they’ll even work together to pull some dirty tricks. For instance, a group of enemies might keep you occupied while another enemy sneaks around behind you and unloads a clip in your back before you can even turn around to see what’s happening. If you shoot an enemy in the leg, he’ll fall to the ground and squirm around while shouting for help. If you don’t finish him off right away, another enemy will pick up his fallen comrade and carry him to safety. The game does a great job of making the enemies seem crafty and intelligent. A good deal of the challenge here is derived from the fact that it’s usually far more effective to outfox your enemies than it is to outgun them.

PC Magazine (or PC Mag) is a computer magazine published biweekly (except in January and July) both in print and online. The magazine is published by Ziff-Davis Publishing Holdings Inc. The first edition was released in January 1982 as a monthly called PC (the "Magazine" was not added to the logo until the first major redesign in January 1986). The magazine moved to biweekly publication in 1983 after a single monthly issue swelled to more than 800 pages. The magazine's editor-in-chief, Lance Ulanoff, ascended to his current post in July 2007. Jim Louderback had held this position since 2005, but accepted the position of CEO of Revision3, an online media company.
